Road Route 3: Conquering Kintbury
This route takes us up and over the Downs to the pretty river Kennet valley, and back again, often on some really lovely quiet roads. One of my favourites.
Head down to Letcombe Basset, then up and over Sincome hill before heading down the ‘Valley of the Racehourse’ to Lambourn via Sheepdrove. Follow the river Lambour to Eastbury then up and over to the Ermin Street (Roman road), then wind our way down to and along the Kennet to Kintbury, before heading north back into the hills. We go through Wickham to Welford, which was the home to the iconic Great British Bake Off tent until 2019. Just after Great Shefford, we detour off the A338 for a few miles, as the roads are a lot quieter, and we get a few extra climbs thrown in for free. The whoosh down Court Hill back to the Letcombe Regis is a nice reward at the end.
